Week 7: Earthquakes
On Friday the 13th, we will watch an episode of the PBS show NOVA (aired June 2014), "Deadliest Earthquakes". Students are to take notes on the video, looking for at least 10 important earthquake facts that they feel might show up on next week's earthquake quiz. The PBS link below is a higher quality link, but I included a YouTube link as well. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/deadliest-earthquakes.html
Thursday we will complete two notetaking assignments, "Earthquake Anatomy" and "Seismic Waves Notes". Slides and teacher notes attached below. We also watched the below animations of the four different types of seismic waves, and used slinkies to model p-waves and s-waves.
Complete the following worksheet in your notebook.
Tuesday we reviewed the GeoPatterns assignment, read section 2.1 "Forces in the Earth's Crust", and added a chart and some diagrams to our notebooks. Copy the chart and diagrams attached below into your notebook. Use section 2.1 or your notes to fill out the chart and properly label the diagrams.
As a class, we outlined chapter section 2.1. Instructions and the class example are attached below.
Week 6: Unit 3 Earthquakes
On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week, instead of having science class as normal the school counselors will take the kids to computer lab 423 to discuss high school registration and other related topics. There will be no new science assignments for these three days. Students who miss one or more days with Mr. Holmes and Mrs. Barton may be pulled from class later in the semester to complete registration.
