If a student is falling behind in class and/or is having difficulty keeping their grades up, they may be referred to ASI (After School Intervention). Any of a student's teachers may refer them to ASI, and attendance is mandatory. If a student fails to show up for an ASI session, they may face disciplinary action including lunch detention, ISS (in-school suspension), and will continue to be referred to the ASI program until they are caught up on their missing and late work.
After School Intervention will be on most Thursdays (2:45 - 4:30) and Saturdays (8:00 - 10:00) until the end of the year. If a student is referred to ASI before 8:00 am Wednesday, an automatic phone call will go out informing parents and the student will be required to attend the next Thursday and Saturday sessions until they are caught up on late and missing work. If they are referred by 8:00 am Friday, they will be required to attend the next Saturday session, and then continue attending until caught up. Students are expected to know what work they are missing and bring it with them. While we will try and make that work available through the ASI teacher, it is the student's responsibility to come prepared. ASI 2014 Schedule

I do not often give daily homework in science class. However, occasionally homework is assigned and it is the student's responsibility to be aware of due dates. Also, if daily classwork is not completed during classtime, it is to be completed as homework that night for the next day.
Most assignments are to be placed in the student's science notebook and will not receive a separate grade (and will not show up individually in PowerSchool). These assignments will be completed and added to the student's science notebook right away. Notebooks will only be collected twice a quarter, around mid-terms and at the Firm Deadline at the end of the quarter. A running list of expected notebook assignments is maintained on the home page of this site. For assignments that are turned in separately, students must clearly label all work with their full name, teacher's name, class & period, date, and assignment title. Failure to properly label work will result in a lower score, or if work cannot be identified, a score of "Missing" (50%). Headings should be in proper MLA format. As per the general 8th-grade Homework Policy, if the student does not have homework for a specific class, they should either read or work on the Khan Academy for a minimum of 40 minutes every night. Students are responsible to be aware of all due dates. If work is not completed and turned in by the assigned due date, it will be marked "Missing" (50%) or "Incomplete" (50%). If the work is not labeled properly, it may be given a score of "Missing" and will be returned to the student (or placed in the "no name" bin in the classroom).
Most assignments can be turned in late or redone with no penalty by the Firm Deadline for each quarter. It is the student's responsibility to track their late, missing, and incomplete work. Lab assignments must be completed and turned in 2 weeks after the due date for full credit, and will not be accepted after that deadline. No work is accepted after the Firm Deadline for each quarter. The Firm Deadline for 1st Quarter is Thursday, 9 October.
