I've made some changes to how I will be grading daily work, and also changed the rules on quiz retakes. Attached is the slide presentation from today's lecture, take quality notes in your class notebook. Due in-class today, 10/22, can be turned in by 10/29 without penalty. Worth 10 points.
Carefully read and follow the instructions on the worksheet to create your own HR Star Diagram. Once you have finished, glue your finished star diagram into your notebook and title it "HR Star Diagram". Then, on the next page, answer all six questions on the worksheet in complete sentences. Due 10/22, can be turned in by 10/29 without penalty. Worth 10 points. Note: If you print out your own copy, be careful not to print the third, blank page (I can't get rid of it in the file).
Watch the following 45-minute video on the life cycles of stars. From the worksheet below, write the completed sentences into your class notebook. Due 10/21, can be turned in by 10/28 without penalty. "Life & Death of a Star" is an episode from the History Channel series "The Universe". This excellent documentary series is available on Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, plus you can occasionally find it on YouTube.
This next video covers the same information, but is only 5 minutes long. It's not a required watch, but is a very good video on the life cycle of stars. Quarter 1 grades are updated in PowerSchool! All papers, notebooks, quizzes, exams, and projects are graded.
All grades were entered by 3:00 pm today for report card printing, with the exception of late work and everyone's final quarter project grades (which were entered later in the afternoon). Your final Q1 grades for Science might be slightly different than what your report card says. The firm deadline for work and quizzes related to Units 1 and 2 was October 10. The last day to turn in work and retake quizzes for Unit 3 and the quarter project was last Thursday, October 17. No further work for Q1 will be accepted, unless circumstances are special. It is the student's responsibility to check PowerSchool to see if any mistakes occurred in grading. You have until Wednesday this week to let me know if you feel your grades are in error. Today we start our next unit, Unit 4: Stars & Galaxies. Chapter 4 in the textbook covers the same material.
Thursday, October 17, is the last day of the quarter, and there is no school for students on Friday. Thanks for all the hard work, enjoy your three-day weekend, and we'll see you 2nd Quarter!
Thursday is the absolute last day for any late work for Unit 3: Solar System! It is also the last day to retake the Unit 3 Quiz. You cannot retake the Q1 Final Exam. Make sure you turn in your notebooks! Depending on which period you are in, you will take the Quarter Final Exam on either Wednesday, October 16, or Thursday, October 17. The exam will cover Unit 1: The Scientific Method & The Metric System, Unit 2: The Earth System, and Unit 3: The Solar System. No information from Unit 4: Stars & Galaxies will appear on the exam.
This exam cannot be retaken, your grade will be final. Reminder about due dates for the Quarter Project:
Your Quarter Project grade will be: 40% model + 40% paper + 20% presentation = 100%. Overall, your project grade is weighted at 80%, which is the same as your quizzes and exams (daily work and homework is weighted at 20%). Presentation Guidelines
Attached below is the Q1 Final Exam Study Guide. Use your notebooks to study for the exam, supplement your studying with the textbook in class and the internet at home.
